About
Nipissing means “big water” in the Algonquin language. The name Nipissing was given to Lake Nipissing, the third-largest lake in Ontario excluding the great lakes, as well as the Township of Nipissing, Nipissing District, and Nipissing University. Lake Nipissing lies about 25 km northwest of the oldest provincial park in Canada, Algonquin Provincial Park, which is in the south end of Nipissing District.
Algonquin Park is a National Historic Site of Canada is one of the most popular provincial parks in the province and the country. Over 2,400 lakes and 1,200 kilometres of streams and rivers are located within the park – they were formed by the retreat of the glaciers during the last ice age.
The park is in an area of transition between the coniferous forests of Northern Ontario and the deciduous forests of Southern Ontario. This unique mixture of forest types, and the wide variety of environments in the park, allows the park to support an uncommon diversity of plant and animal species. It is also an important site for wildlife research.
Algonquin Park is well known for its outdoor recreation and its research initiatives, but its beautiful landscapes have inspired Canadian artists, specifically The Group of Seven, also known as the Algonquin School. The Park continues to attract painters, writers, filmmakers, and performance artists who travel to Algonquin to experience its inspiring qualities for themselves.

DISCOVERY NORTH BAY MUSEUM

Museum
Discovery North Bay Museum is located in the historic Canadian Pacific Railway station. Built in 1903, the station was restored in 2004 to house the museum. The North Bay Area Museum Society was established in 1973 as a not-for-profit organization and registered charity to preserve and celebrate the history of
North Bay. In addition to regular programming and exhibitions, the museum offers two tours of North Bay – Historic Downtown and Haunted Downtown.
